XXI CONGRESS OF
THE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF LEGAL MEDICINE |
|
 |
With the High Patronage of His Excellency
The President of the Portuguese Republic
|

 |
Message from the Honourable Minister
of Justice of the Republic of Portugal
I would like to extend my greetings to
all the participants of this 21st Conference of the International
Academy of Legal Medicine.
I am very pleased to
be associated with this event, which is taking place in
Portugal for the first time, coinciding with the 110th anniversary
of the founding of the first medical-legal institutions
in this country.
I am sure that this conference,
which brings together some of the most renowned members
of the international Forensic Medicine community, will provide
an excellent opportunity for reflection and debate, and
for the exchange of knowledge and technical skills, thereby
giving a new impulse to the development of knowledge in
this field.
Knowledge is essential to mankind and
plays a crucial role in human actions. Indeed, it is through
a combination of reason and experience that man manages
to develop the techniques and technologies that allow him
to modify the environment that surrounds him.
But
knowledge is also constructed by sharing; and the free discussion
of ideas enables us to construct new pathways into the future.
Thus, it is on occasions like these that knowledge
is generated, the kind of knowledge that ultimately makes
it possible for us to change our world for the better.
I wish you all a very pleasant stay in Portugal,
and I hope that the 21st Conference of the International
Academy of Legal Medicine will prove to be a memorable event
in all respects.
Alberto Costa Minister
of Justice

Message from the President of the Congress
Dear Colleagues, friends and guests
It is a great pleasure to invite you to the 21st IALM
Conference, which will be held in Lisbon from 28 to 30 May
2009. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about
the latest doctrinal, scientific, and technological advances
in legal medicine and forensic sciences. In addition, it
will enable participants to share ideas, thoughts and experiences
with colleagues from all over the world. Our scientific
programme is particularly attractive, featuring speakers
who are amongst the most prestigious professionals in the
international forensic community. The social events have
also been carefully planned.
May I also invite you
to participate in a very special ceremony that will take
place after this Congress, on 31st May, at 10.30 am, at
the University of Coimbra (www.uc.pt), one of the oldest
and most prestigious universities in Europe, founded in
1279: the award of an Honorary PhD to Professors Ângelo
Fiori (from Italy), Bernard Knight (from Wales), Bernd Brinkmann
(from Germany) and Enrique Villanueva (from Spain). You
will find details about this ceremony in this website.
Let me add that Lisbon and Coimbra are very friendly
and charming cities, cities full of history, monuments and
traditions, with culture and entertainment to suit all tastes.
So accept our invitation and come to Portugal in May 2009.
I can assure you that this event will live up to all your
expectations and that we shall do our best to make it truly
unforgettable and worthwhile.
See you in Lisbon.
Duarte Nuno Vieira President of IALM
